Music has always been an important part of worship at Holy Spirit, and we take pride in providing excellent music at all of our liturgies. The music at Holy Spirit varies in style from traditional ensemble (organ, trumpets, timpani), to contemporary ensemble (piano, guitars, drums), to a single piano and vocalist. Our extensive music ministry includes choral and handbell ensembles for all ages from young children to adults. Following is information about all of the music ministries offered at Holy Spirit.
No auditions necessary! The Chamber Choir is a wonderful means of meeting new people. The ability to read music is not necessary, and there is no prior music experience required. Everyone is welcome! Rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings at 7:00 PM, September through Pentecost (our parish feast day). The Chamber Choir sings approximately twice per month, at all major feasts, and during Holy Week.
By audition only. The Chapel Choir season is divided into two semesters per year: Winter (October - December) and Spring (February - April). The Chapel Choir sings for various concerts, prayer services, and holy day Masses.
The Resurrection Choir is a choir that helps lead the congregation in song at funerals. It helps complete the Mass for the bereaved family. There are no rehearsals; you just come when there is a funeral.
The Music Department is very pleased to have Ms. Catherine Jandernoa as our Children's Choir Director. She is a recent graduate of Aquinas College with a BA in Music. The Children's Choir is open to anyone in grades 3-8. Rehearsals are on Tuesday afternoons from 3:30-4:30 PM.
Adult Handbell Choir
Holy Spirit is blessed to have a 5-octave set of Malmark handbells, as well as a 3-octave set of handchimes. The Adult Handbell Choir is open to anyone in 9th grade or older. The ability to read music is a requirement for the handbell choir; however, no previous handbell experience is necessary. The Adult Handbell Choir plays at one liturgy per month, on special feast and celebrations, and on Christmas and Easter.
Middle School Handbell Choir
The Middle School Handbell Choir is a ministry for students in grades 5-8 attending Holy Spirit School. The handbell choir rehearses weekly and helps add to our liturgies throughout the school year.
The Summer Choir is a fun, laid back way to lead the congregation in song! We meet at 9:30 AM each Sunday in July and August and sing for the 10:00 AM Mass. All ages are welcome. No previous choral or music experience is necessary. The Summer Choir is a great way for spouses, friends and families to all sing together!
A cantor leads the congregatin in song during the Mass. The cantor proclaims the Word of God as psalmist, and helps promote congregational singing during the liturgy.
Musicians of all kinds are strongly encouraged to share their talents to help enhance our liturgies at Holy Spirit. Instrumentalists can play for different Masses and occasions, based on the instrument played and the ability of the musician.
We are very excited to have the recent addition of an Audio/Visual Ministry team to our liturgies at Holy Spirit. One person is needed to operate the A/V equipment at each liturgy to project our worship aids onto the worship screens.
If you are interested in joining the music ministry as a singer or instrumentalist, please contact Joe Houdek (Director of Music) to set up an appointment. After a simple audition we can discuss how you might be able to share your voice or instrument to help add to our liturgies at Holy Spirit.
